Aloe Plant Poisoning

Aloe Plant Poisoning

Did you know the common plant aloe vera is poisonous to both cats and dogs? The plant is part of the Aloeceae family and is commonly found in our homes because of its soothing properties when used on burns. However, this plant can also be harmful to our pets.  Aloe vera plants contain saponins (glucosides with foaming characteristics) that can cause an increase of mucus production and water in the digestive tract. This in turn can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, anorexia, depression and even a change in urine color if ingested. If your pet has ingested Aloe please contact a veterinarian for assistance.
